Well as you know we are putting up a show at K H Kala Soudha on 24-July-2010 . The play is "Deluxe Hair Cutting Saloon" written and directed by Sandeep Shikhar. A number of people have asked me, what the play is about ( The writer made sure that you couldn't make any sense from the title ;) ). Obviously I can't divulge the story here because Sandeep has made us sign a 200 page non-discolsure agreement. Sometimes I wonder whether I am even allowed to play my character on the final day or will Sandeep's legal team sue me for doing that . But I digress from the topic(age is catching up).
So putting myself at risk of a lawsuit, I would like to say something about the play. It is the simplest of plays , it is the most complex of plays (please ignore the plagiarism on my part). Well it is simple enough to understand at the first level , but it has enough complexity to make you think and discuss about as you leave the theatre. Frankly sometimes I wonder how did the writer come up with such intricate layers. Each time I go through the script I find something new (no I am not stupid) and I believe the effect would be more profound when you are watching the play. It is like a multi layered cake wherein all you taste in the first byte is the sweetness, but as you continue eating , you feel the tinge of different flavors and ingredients and you end up wondering , how did the chef come up with this recipe.
The play shows a motley group of people who have no reason to be together except a strange underlying connection which keeps them together. They love hating each other. The closest analogy I can come up with is number of soft balls attached to each other with rubber strings. The more they go away from each other the faster they come back. Sandeep has done a brilliant job in presenting so many emotions and complexities in the simplest of settings. The play is sometimes funny and sometimes sad and sometimes abstract. But in the sadness you see the reason for the people to stick to each other, in the funny part you can feel the underlying frustrations and limitations whereas the abstract gives credence to reality. The characters are unique but have commonalities. Their anger is in your face but their compassion is subtle. And with all this you end up wondering , what is real and what is abstract. Where does the dream end and where does the reality begin, but I think this the PIE talking .(Post Inception Effect)
Nevertheless I believe the play should be a good watch and I hope the cast (includes me) and the director can do justice to the script.
Hope to see you at KH Kala Soudha . Tickets are avalaible at www.indianstage.in
